Blake Teres post 3.5

Websites/Apps great for grades 7-12

1. PurpleMath.com

- PurpleMath is a great website for algebra. With in depth explanations and pictures for concepts of all levels of algebra, students of any grade can find exactly what they need. The student will be able to know how to navigate the world wide web, as well as basic search skills to find the topic they need to review. This resource could be used by any age past elementary school, as algebraic language is not taught until middle school. If I were to recommend this site, I have no warnings to give. I have been using this site for many years and have never had one problem with it.

2. Block Dude

- Block Dude is a game found on TI-83 graphing calculators. Although not teaching any specific concept, this game is extremely puzzling. It begins easy, but gets difficult very quickly. The object of the game is to get from one part of the level to the other, only being allowed to move blocks to help you get there. It seems simple, but is actually a great thinking tool. It teaches you to explore all options before quitting, logical thinking, and problem solving. In order to play this game, you will need to be able to find the game on the calculator. This game is great for anyone of any age, as it is definitely not easy in the later levels. As a warning, you could probably spend too much time playing, or get distracted in math class while the teacher is teaching something you might need to know for a test.

3. MathTV

- This site offers instructional videos for basic mathematics, geometry, algebra, calculus, and trigonometry. Everything you need is easily found on the sidebar on the front page of the website. This is a great source for anyone in the same age category, as all of these topics are taught at the middle and high school level. One would need to be able to browse the internet and have speakers or headphones so that they could hear the video. There is no warning about this website, as it serves its function extremely well.

4. Formulus HD

- This is an app for smartphones and tablets. Essentially, it is a large digital library full of formulas. After downloading the app, there are hundreds of formulas that cover pretty much any formula you would ever need to use. To be able to use this, you would need a smartphone or a tablet. However, the same formulas will all be found online if all that you had was a computer. This app is age appropriate for anyone in the same grade range, as it covers basic algebra up to higher level calculus. The only warning is that there are some advertisements on the app that may get annoying, but other than that, it serves its purpose well.

  1. This app (Formulus HD) is very easy to navigate but I wish it had examples, although that may detract from the app's simplicity.
    Great work.
