The relationship presented in this periodical does not represent a linear function, because the rate of change is not constant. This graph represents a mathematical model because each input has exactly one output.
The graph above does not represent a function because the average rate of change is not constant. The slope of part S, U and W are all equal to zero.

ReplyDeleteboth of your examples are good real-life applications. your first example, however, is not a mathematical model because the output (gdp) is not dependent on time (year). your explanation saying that there is exactly one output for one input is the definition of a function not the definition of a mathematical model.
your second example represents a function. there is one output per input and it passes the vertical line test. this is not an example, unfortunately, of a relationship that does not represent a function.
