I chose the periodical the economist and the article titled Decoupling: One Expensive Euro. The relationship between functions and non functions is that functions have one input per output and non functions do not. The function is a non-linear function and I know that it is not linear because the function it passes the vertical line test. The function is a mathematical model because the input is dependent on the output.
Part B:

The relationships in these is not a function because the input and output are not related. When a relationship is not a function the input and output are not dependent and it does not pass the vertical line test.
Hi Rebecca, I would first like to say that I found both articles to be very interesting and I enjoyed reading about the graphs presented in them. I also do agree with you in part B that functions should have outputs that are reliant on the inputs, however I when looking at the graphs I feel that they may actually be a function. Taking a look at them both, I could imagine that they would in fact pass the vertical line test, although they may not be linear. Would you mind explaining a little more on your thoughts of part b?
ReplyDeleteI love the meme!! Not only is it relevant, it is also used correctly. I also agree and like that you used the economist for your first article- I'm a huge fan. Also, function outputs should be related to their inputs.

For part B, I believe the graphs are functions because each input is related to only one output
ReplyDeleterebecca,
ReplyDeleteyour first example is really good and very interesting! your explanations are spot on, although you did not mention whether or not there is a mathematical model here. i want to also point out that there are two separate relationships in the graph that you chose for your first example, so two separate functions.
for your second example, i am in agreement with your classmates. the example shows three separate relationships that are functions. gdp is a function of indonesia, thailand, and malaysia individually.
other than that good job.
