Whats your function - Jackson Yellen

What’s Your Function?

Blog submission number 2
Part A:
The function in this article is the amount of money people in Vietnam are making off growing rice. The function is linear because as the government makes more land available to farmers the farmers can grow more rice, which leads them to making more money. This would be considered a mathematical model.

Part B:

The relationship in this article is that police are forbidden to going to certain areas not because they are dangerous but because the people in charge do not want police going and falling asleep on duty.  This is not a mathematical model.

  2. I didn't know Vietnam exports rice, not to mention being one fifth of the global total.

  6. jackson,

your first article itself was very interesting one! some of your explanations were not entirely accurate. i don't think that the example represents a mathematical model since year does not really dictate exports or milled production (i.e. output is not dependent on input). additionally, neither relationship is linear, since there is not a constant rate of change. finally, i just want to note that there are two separate relationships represented in the first example the you presented. please make sure you understand!

your second example doesn't really meet the requirements of the assignment. you were charged with locating a real-life relationship that is a non-function.
