What's Your Function?

What's your function?

Part A:
Apple Revenue from 2009-2013

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/apple-retail-financials/

This relationship shows how revenue is relative to time, from 2009 to 2013.
This relationship is a function because there is exactly one output for each input, thus passing the vertical line test. This function is not linear because when it is plotted not all of the points are on a straight line, also the slopes at every interval are not the same,  as shown in the graph below.

(65.22-36.537)/(2010-2009)= 28.683

(108.24-65.22)/(2011-2010)= 43.02

(156.50-108.24)/(2012-2011)= 48.26

(170.91-156.50)/(2013-2012)= 14.41

Average Rate of Change:
(170.91-36.537)/ (2013-2009) = (134.373/4) = 33.59

I had to find a line of best fit, regression line, to accomadate all of the points: y=36x+(-72293.75)

Part B: Apple Lease Commitments for Q1 to Q4 for 2013

The meaning of this relationship is the price of lease commitments for retail store locations for Q1 to Q4 for the 2013 fiscal year. It shows that as the "quarter increases" so does the the price of lease commitments in billions of dollars.
I am certain that this relationship is not a function. It does not pass the vertical line test, there are more than 1 outputs for any given input, thus also making it not linear. Q1 and Q2 of 2013 both have the same input of $3.2 billion. When one attempts to try the vertical line test this relationship will fail.

  1. I really enjoyed that you posted the graph and the table in order for us to have a better understanding about the material you used. It was good that you showed every little detail of your work!

  2. I really liked that you used the information from Apple's financial statements. It is cool to see how that looks and the explanation was really clear. It's interesting to see how a lot of things in the real world can apply to what we are learning.

  3. I loved your way of collecting the data in both parts A&B. Also, how you applied it to our assignment. Really good and interesting since I don't usually read about Apple much. Neat work =)

  4. walid,

your first example is good and well explained. in your second example, what we have here are several relationships with respect to year (time). so the example is a function.

    1. The example that I used was just for the Lease Commitments in Q1 to Q4 of fiscal year 2013, so that would not make it a function as it does not pass the vertical line test. For two quarters, Q1 and Q2 the same output value was given.
